MATANZAS, August 17 (Caridad Díaz Beltrán, Lux Info Press) -
Yudieski Rodríguez Cepero, an 18-year-old military conscript, was
electrocuted when an electrical cable strung over the military barracks where he
was receiving basic training fell on him as he was preparing to go on guard duty
at 10 p.m. August 12.
Three other conscripts at the Jagüey Grande, Matanzas province,
military facility were present when Rodríguez died. There is speculation
the cable was not properly secured, as there was no apparent cause for it to
fall. There have been other cases recently of incidents involving conscripts. In
May, a young man lost his left leg as the result of an anti-personnel mine
explosion in Cárdenas, Matanzas province.
All Cuban males must serve for two years in the military, starting at age
16.
