HAVANA, July 31 (Carlos Alberto Domínguez, Cuba Verdad) A number of
university students have said they volunteered for the "University Brigades
for Social Work" and will spend 15 days of their vacations helping take a
government-mandated attitude survey in every household in the city.
"This is investigative work we are carrying out by specific orders of
the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro," said a 5th year medical student. She
said the survey was started in July, and the data collected "will be taken
very seriously."
The questionaire used consists of 36 questions. Some are basic, such as
address, number in the family, ages and race. The others ask why youths abandon
school after the 9th grade, why they don't want to work, and yet others ask
about the state of the schools, the functioning of the hospitals and medical
facilities, living conditions of older residents, and opinions of TV programs.
A survey worker said, "What is wanted is to know the problems facing
the Cuban people, to be able to solve them."
Residents were cynical about this explanation, saying the government knows
full well what the problems are but won't implement solutions which would imply
a loss of control.
