HAVANA, September 16 (Regina del Sol, AIDH) No surgery requiring general anesthesia has been performed in the provincial hospital in Ciego de Ávila for the last month, said Dr. María del Pilar Arcaño.
For this type of anesthesia, "fentanil" is needed, a domestically-produced drug that authorities informed medical personnel would not be available for three months, without giving any further explanation or proposing a subsitute.
As a consequence, all but the most urgent operations are being postponed, engrossing the waiting lists for surgery even more than they already were.
In some cases, the wait for elective surgery was close to two months before this development.
