HAVANA, September 7 (Ricardo González Alfonso) Two State Security officers arrested independent journalist Luis Alberto Rivera, 31, at 4:00 p.m. today at his home in Santiago de Cuba.
The officers took Rivera to an unknown destination in a blue soviet-built Lada, said his wife Yessera Sessín Herrero.
Rivera had just reported the arrest of three physicians near the U. S. Naval Base at Guantánamo Bay. (See following story.) He had also been following the story of a wave of arrests in the days preceeding September 8, feast day of Cubas patron, Our Lady of Charity.
Rivera had been followed since 8:00 p.m. Wednesday by the occupants of a white Lada, license number UM 07151. Openly following a dissident is a technique often used by State Security personnel, presumably to let him know he is under surveillance at all times. Rivera had reported that the
surveillance intensified Thursday morning before his arrest.
