Home brew consumption on the upswing in Havana

HAVANA, November 5 (Jorge Cordero, AFPCP) - Alcoholism is evidently on the upswing in Havana. Dozens of drunks can be seen sleeping in the early mornings in areas such as the centric Paseo del Prado and the Anfiteatro.

One of them said: "There’s nothing better to do than have a drink of "chispa’e tren" (literally, train sparks), the name given to industrial alcohol that’s filtered several times through charcoal. It isn’t even worth it to work, for what they pay you!" It is widely believed that many, especially the young, drink to evade a reality that, they say, they cannot change.
