Engineers Pursue Project Despite Official Disapproval

ALTO SONGO, Santiago de Cuba, March 14 (Humberto Melo, ANAIC) - Engineers Elio Alberto Montes de Oca and Eduardo Sayago toured the eastern provinces of Cuba, continuing their work of assessing and advising independent agricultural cooperatives, in spite of official disapproval.

During their tour, Montes de Oca and Sayago visited the facilities of the independent cooperative "Transición," performed soil analysis and listened to the farmers in the area in order to complete a technical report as to the best and most efficient use of available resources.

The farmers were appreciative of their labors, as this is the first time that they receive technical advice from qualified personnel outside of official chanels.

The engineers are working under the auspices of the recently created National Center of Agricultural Studies, an adjunct of the National Alliance of Independent Farmers of Cuba (ANAIC).

Earlier in the week, after performing similar work in the neighboring province of Las Tunas, Montes de Oca and Sayago were detained by State Security officers, who interrogated them and eventually instructed them to go home to Matanzas province.

On Thursday, Montes de Oca and Sayago were again picked up by two State Security agents, this time in Alto Songo, Santiago de Cuba province, and taken to the local police station. At 11:30 p.m. they were taken by car to the National Highway, they were told, so they could return to their home province.
