HAVANA, March - On the road between Havana and Ariguanabo, there is a sign that reads: CAN (National Poultry-Breeding Enterprise) Territorial Unit Producers of eggs and meat "Poultry Breeders Producing For The People". The question that comes to mind is, What production? and, For what
People?
Some months ago, several markets in the area started selling poultry products "free" of the rationing system: chicken livers at 25 pesos a kilo; necks at 10 pesos a kilo; wings at 20 pesos a kilo; feet at 5 pesos a kilo; and eggs at one peso each.
Buying these involved early morning lines in anticipation of the supply truck and, in some cases, disappointment for those in the rear once supplies ran out.
Another question: Where is the rest of the chicken? A glance at the windows of the dollar stores reveals chicken breasts and legs, no waiting. No regular Cuban with Cuban income in Cuban pesos need apply. Only dollars spoken here.
