SANTIAGO DE CUBA, February - The story of the rafter child Elián González is pervasive in the Cuban news media. All one hears is accusations against the child's Miami relatives and other exile figures; they are called thiefs, muggers, drug traffickers, drunks as well as drunk
drivers.
In Cuba, however, according to the official media, "all is well" and there are no problems of any kind except the "kidnapping" of Elián and the embargo.
But those who live in glass houses shouldn't cast stones. Cuban media never mention pick-pockets, drug addicts, common delinquents and unruly youth who can be seen in any town or city in the island. They never mention the hundreds who fill the prisons, the increase in homosexuality and
prostitution.
There's no mention either of widespread alcohol addiction, especially among the young, and of drunken driven.
This is the undeniable reality in Cuba, and it is not mentioned. Disinformation is used to maintain all, in and out of the country, in a state of ignorance.
