Fisheries Workers Complain Of Abuses

CAIBARIEN, VILLA CLARA, June 27 (Héctor Trujillo Pis) – Workers of the government-run Combined Fisheries of Caibarién complain of lack of food and water in the region.

Combined Fisheries is the main employer in the area. Its production is destined primarily for the tourist trade and the company reportedly operates profitably. In spite of that, it hasn’t paid 35,000 pesos owed to the boat repair shop workers for work performed. Also, fishermen complain that since January they haven’t been paid the small supplements in dollars to which they are entitled as workers in a hard-currency-earning enterprise.

Management has not explained the reason for the shortfalls.
