Who 'Lost' Elian

John LeBoutillier. NewsMax.comThursday, June 29, 2000

Who "lost" Elian?

Who was most responsible for depriving this little boy of his day in court and his chance to live a full life of freedom in this wonderful country?

Was it Clinton?

Was it the courts of our land that deprived this boy of the unique opportunity to live here?

Was it the all-too-powerful "mainstream news media" – which is decidedly leftist – that painted the canvas in a way that doomed Elian?

Was it the long hand of the dictator Fidel Castro, who was able to work his evil here on American soil with the complicity of the White House?

Was it the American people? The very people who, when pushed to the wall, have saved the world from Soviet communism, two world wars, countless smaller conflicts and all sorts of other crises? Have these same American people "allowed" Elian to be taken back to a communist prison island?

No. While all mentioned above share in the blame for the travesty that has happened in this case, the lion’s share of the blame goes to the Republican party.

That’s right. It was the GOP that compliantly rolled over and allowed this evil to occur. It was a Republican Congress that refused to even schedule a vote on legal residency for Elian.

It was the Republican Congress that allowed the Clinton administration to trample on Elian’s rights with total impunity!

Then, after the horrendous spectacle of the early morning Gestapo-style April 22 raid to seize Elian, the initial reaction from the GOP-led Congress was to hold immediate hearings. But within days presumptive Republican presidential nominee George W. Bush, bowing to his pollster and campaign focus groups, urged the House and Senate to "drop" any further investigation of the raid.

The final sellout came within the past weeks when Rep. George Nethercutt, R-Wash., led the charge to "soften" the 40-year-long trade embargo on Havana!

Nethercutt is the very same fellow who, when running in 1994 against then-House Speaker Tom Foley, pledged to serve only three terms (six years) in the House. But then he contracted Potomac Fever, an addictive disease that also apparently causes memory loss. Suddenly Nethercutt forgot his "term limits" pledge and instead has decided to make a lifelong career out of Congress.

It is this weasel who led his fellow Republicans on the Hill into the first softening of the trade embargo since Castro stole power at the point of a gun 40 years ago. The GOP-led House and Senate have now passed bills that will allow American food and medicine to be sold to Cuba.

I ask you: What is the point of being a Republican if you will not stand up against Clinton and Castro and stand up for individual rights and the right to live in freedom – no matter how old you are?

Furthermore, whatever happened to the Reagan-like quality of the Republican Party – that, unlike liberal Democrats, when we make a promise we keep it?

Now, ever since "Read my lips," we have been on the same low level of trustworthiness as the Clinton Democrats. To the American people there is no difference between the two parties.

Elian, God bless you. You have done much to teach us about ourselves. And it is not a pretty picture. Our own American people are woefully ignorant of the evil you will have to now encounter. And our own people, through their ignorance and complacency, take their freedom for granted.

I pray for you, little Elian. I hope you survive what faces you. I have doubts that this great country can survive what faces it.
