Political Prisoner States He Is Tortured

HAVANA, June 25 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba-Verdad) - Arturo Suárez Ramos, 36, is one of the political prisoners in Cuba that has spent the longest time in jail. He has served 13 years of a 30-year sentence.

He was accused of air piracy and is confined in the Combinado del Este prison in Havana.

This political prisoner is tortured daily, physically and psychologically. Some months ago he was twice dragged down the stairs by his guards.

He managed to get word out to Cuba-Verdad through a friendly conduit. In his statement, he affirms he intends to continue fighting for his liberty and that of all those like him.

Suárez Ramos is being held in solitary confinement in one of the punishment cells of the prison. The cell has no light and no running water and is infested with vermin. He sleeps on the floor and has been refusing to take the sun for three years because the authorities want him to do so in the company of highly-dangerous common criminals.
