Oct. 19, 1960 - US imposes economic embargo on Cuba, except food and medicine.

Feb. 8, 1963 - The Kennedy administration prohibits travel to Cuba and makes financial and commercial transactions with Cuba illegal for US citizens.

July 8, 1963 - All Cuban-owned assets in the United States are frozen.

March 18, 1977 - US government lifts prohibition on travel to Cuba and allows US citizens to spend $100 on Cuban goods during their visits.

April 1982 - Charter air links between Miami and Havana are halted by the US government. Washington effectively bans travel to Cuba by prohibiting monetary expenditures in Cuba by US citizens.

Aug. 23, 1988 - President Reagan signs trade act to end licensing requirements for importing recordings, printed material, and other media from Cuba.

Nov. 20, 1989 - The Treasury Department limits travel-related expenses for US citizens to Cuba to $100 per day.

Oct. 15, 1992 - Congress passes the Cuban Democracy Act, which prohibits foreign-based subsidiaries of US companies from trading with Cuba, travel to Cuba by US citizens, and family remittances to Cuba. The law allows private groups to deliver food and medicine to Cuba.

March 12, 1996 - President Clinton signs the Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity Act, which enacts penalties on foreign companies doing business in Cuba, permits US citizens to sue foreign investors who make use of US-owned property seized by the Cuban government, and denies entry into the United States to such foreign investors.

January 1999 - President Clinton slightly relaxes trade embargo, allowing nongovernmental organizations to buy fertilizer, farm equipment, and other supplies.
