ROME, (ZENIT.org).- The death penalty is becoming increasingly common in Cuba. 13 people were executed last year, and at least 9 others were sentenced to capital punishment.
At least 5 persons were executed in 1998, although only 2 deaths were confirmed. Given that information on human rights is severely restricted in the country, and the authorities do not compile statistics on such a thorny issue, the number could be much higher.
According to Amnesty International, there is a "worrying increase in the use of the death penalty in the island." This phenomenon is taking place, following the introduction last March of a law establishing the death penalty to punish a greater number of crimes. |
