HAVANA, June The Puentes Grandes policlinic, in Havanas Plaza municipality, is in critical condition. Its roof is falling, its walls are crumbling and now it doesnt have electricity.
The policlinic. formerly a sanatorium for TB patients, was last remodeled in 1958. The lack of maintenance of the last 42 years and the winds of Hurricane Irene last October brought it to its sorry state today. Recently, outages in the power grid left it without electricity.
Still, there are 80 people working in it, taking care of approximately 10,000 residents of the area. Thousands of dollars are needed to repair the old wires and to restore the roof and walls.
