Shoes Burned In Havana

HAVANA, June 21 (Pedro Nasco Alvarez, UPECI) – Thousands of pairs of several kinds of shoes, apparently imported, are being burned in the ovens of La Plata (a unit of the heavy metals industry) in Marianao municipality in this city, in spite of the scarcity of shoes in the island.

According to sources who work at the plant and who would not be identified, those in charge of the burning operation say "the shoes are rotten," but they have to be burned whole because it is impossible to break them apart by hand.

Among the shoes being burned, there are children’s sneakers, dress shoes for women and sandals for men. The burning is carried out under the supervision of Customs agents from the free zone in Berroa.
