PINAR DEL RÍO, June 12 (José Hidalgo Gato, Lux InfoPress) Productivity in the coffee growing regions of Guantánamo province, Cubas second most important producer with approximately 3,000 coffee growers, fell below 20 hundredweight per 33 acres this year, given
the poor incentives from the government to growers.
In a recent meeting with Orlando Lugo Fonte, president of the government sponsored Small Farmers National Association, coffee growers stressed that the governments incentive plan is not attractive to producers. The plan is based on the issuance of vouchers good at special stores. The
problem is that the stores seldom have what the growers need and growers end up selling the vouchers to intermediaries. There are approximately 3,000 coffee growers in Guantánamo province.
Productivity in the island as a whole averaged 40 hundredweight per 33 acres, whereas in Costa Rica, for example, it is estimated to be 500 hundredweight per 33 acres.
