Tobacco Growers Didn’t Get Promised Price Increase

SAN LUIS, PINAR DEL RÍO, June 13 (Marcelo Placeres Méndez, Colegio Médico Independiente de Cuba) – Tobacco growers in Cuba’s foremost tobacco growing region say they were deceived by government officials’ promises of higher pay.

Last year, growers say, officials of the Small Farmers National Association promised to increase growers’ compensation, which presently stands at 280 pesos a hundredweight for top quality leaf. The increase hasn’t materialized, and some farmers are considering getting out of tobacco production.
