A dozen illegal Cuban nationals were arrested on a beach near Grassy Key Tuesday morning and are now being processed by U.S. Border Patrol agents.
The group of eight men, three women and a child were all reported to be in good health.
During interviews they claimed to have left Matanzas, Cuba, around 3 a.m. on Friday and arrived on the key around 3 a.m. Tuesday aboard a home-made raft made of metal barrels and wood and powered by a small sail and inboard engine.
The group was picked up by Monroe Sheriff's Office deputies about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday and turned over to the Border Patrol.
The Border Patrol said smuggling is not suspected in this case.
The group has since been sent to the Border patrol's Pembroke Pines station and will later be sent to Krome Detention Center in west Miami-Dade. Most, or all, will probably later be freed to family members.
