The father-in-law of a high-profile Cuban baseball player, Andy Morales, who reportedly defected from the communist island, mobilized exile leaders and contacted two lawyers from the Elián González legal team on Monday.
Morales was said to be among 31 Cubans who were intercepted 25 miles south of the Dry Tortugas on Friday. On Monday the Cubans were still being held aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Spencer and Coast Guard and immigration officials would not confirm that Morales, a 24-year-old third baseman, was
among the group.
Carlos Castillo, who lives in Miami, said his daughter, Morales' wife, called him from Cuba on Wednesday to tell him Morales had left their home outside Havana.
"I know he'll be in danger if he goes back," Castillo said. They'll consider him a traitor to the country."
Castillo contacted U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Miami, and sports agent Gus Dominguez. Two lawyers from the legal team of Elian Gonzalez's Miami relatives were also contacted.
