George W. Bush's official statement on the Elian ruling.
Lake Tahoe, NV, June 1, 2000. National Review. 6/01/00 12:35 p.m.
Texas Governor George W. Bush today made the following statement after learning of the court ruling on Elian Gonzalez:
"Today the courts in Atlanta made a decision that allows the Attorney General to decide the case on the Gonzalez boy. I continue to believe that it's in the child's best interests for the decision to be made by a family court, a court whose job it is to decide the best interests of the
child.
"The vice president has made a similar statement, and I hope he will call upon the Attorney General to allow this decision to be made in a family court."
