Cuba's Second City Short On Caskets

HAVANA, May 29 (Onofre Ávila, Cuba Press) – The city of Santiago de Cuba, in the eastern end of the island, needs 6,900 caskets per year and the local sawmill cannot deliver the wood to make that many.

The local press reports that the provincial casket factory cannot guarantee the consistency and finish of the caskets because they are using papier mâché and local pine.

The principal obstacle is the lack of facilities to dry the wood, which can’t even supply 100 cubic meters of wood, enough to make approximately 900 caskets.

Officials say for the time being they must use soft, green wood which results in caskets of poor quality that decay quickly.
