HAVANA, May 29 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba-Verdad) A meningitis epidemic has been sweeping through the city of Cienfuegos, in south-central Cuba, for the last three days.
At least 310 cases have been reported to date, of which 135 are children. Both viral and bacterial varieties of the disease have been seen in local hospitals, which are trying to cope with the influx of patients. In the "Gustavo Aldereguía" general hospital, even the psychiatric
wards have been pressed into service to house the sick.
The population is reportedly alarmed by the outbreak and is giving the hospitals a wide berth.
