Government Tricks Peasants In Florencia

CIEGO DE ÁVILA, July 27 (Emilio Martín Morales, FAPDH) – The State took advantage of nearly 30 peasants in Florencia, Ciego de Ávila province, in central Cuba, by giving them lands to improve and taking them back when the improvements were done.

The peasants were given the usufruct of certain parcels of land, and they invested time and money in clearing and planting, bought cattle and equipment, and built their modest houses on the lots. Then the inspectors from the ONAT showed up, giving them 72 hours to clear out because the government wanted the land back. They even, the peasants say, pressured them to sell the cattle back to the government at ridiculously low prices.

The peasants have written letters of complaint to the Council of State and to the Ministry of Agriculture but have no answer so far.
