New Dam May Threaten Environment

HAVANA, July 19 (Pedro Nasco, UPECI) – The upcoming completion of La Esperanza dam in the Guantánamo valley may further threaten the environment in the province, according to soils experts in the province.

The impact of the dam on the environment has not been studied, say the experts, and may further the damage already caused by the construction of aquaculture tanks in recent years that resulted in the increased salinization of soils in the valley.

The experts add that the study of the soils is only part of the problem in the valley. That would need to be supplemented by an analysis of the dam’s impact on health, the overall balance of the ecosystem and its long-term effects.
