CIEGO DE AVILA, July 18 (Juan Carlos González, FAPDH) Several officials of the Interior Ministry in Ciego de Ávila province, central Cuba, were demoted, forced into retirement or even jailed, after a jailbreak last December that left five guards dead.
The chief of the Provincial Administration of Jails of the Interior Ministry in Ciego de Ávila, central Cuba, Miguel Daniel, was demoted and reassigned as second in command at the Kilo 8 jail in neighboring Camagüey province.
The Interior Ministry delegate, Olimpio Delgado, was forced into retirement and two guards were sentenced to 18 years at the military disciplinary prison "La Cuba." The measures are a result of the breakout staged by six inmates of the Canaleta prison in Ciego de Ávila on
December 7, who armed with pipes and shivs killed five guards and wounded five more. The inmates took control of the facility for several hours and managed to make good their escape. They were later apprehended.
