HAVANA, July 12 (Carmelo Díaz Fernández, APSIC) A severe drought has been affecting Guantánamo province in eastern Cuba, with rains barely registering at 30% of the historic averages for the region.
Experts have called the situation critical. Water behind dams is so low it cannot be pumped; a thousand head of cattle have died; and drinking water is being supplied to 42,000 residents by truck.
The local authorities have issued warnings to cover all containers holding water to prevent the spread of mosquitoes.
