LOMA DEL GATO, July 11 (Jorge Béjar Baltazar, President, Transición Co-op) With the purchase of 10 ewes and one ram, The Transición independent co-op extended its activities to sheep raising.
The sheep were bought from the private sector at between three and four pesos a pound on the hoof; in other areas of the country the prices can range up to eight pesos per pound.
Co-op directors aim to have 100 ewes by the end of the year to assure the herds profitability. The sheep, of the breed known in Cuba as "pelo de buey," were purchased with the help of the Support Group for Independent Cooperatives, which raises funds outside of Cuba for that
purpose.
The co-op proposes to increase the number of females in the herd and to fatten the males for slaughter and sale to members at affordable prices.
