HAVANA, July 7 (Lucas Garve, CPI) Inspectors of the National Office of Taxation (ONAT) launched a massive campaign aimed at freelance workers throughout the island.
The inspectores faned out through the most highly populated areas where the self-employed (taxi drivers, photographers, candy sellers) tend to gather, asking for documents where the workers must record their income on a weekly basis.
Authorities said the campaign is designed to check that the workers are properly entering their income in the documents which they must present when paying their taxes. Any worker caught without the proper documentation can be fined up to 500 pesos.
In spite of official protestations to the contrary, thousands of freelance workers have turned back their licenses and abandoned their businesses, complaining about the heavy tax load and the constant harassment by inspectors.
This year, ONAT expects to receive 13,700 million pesos from payments by independent workers, according to officials. ONAT estimates the number of workers without appropriate documentation at more than 1,000 in Havana alone.
