Independent Journalist Threatened With Gag Law

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, July 9 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO) – Captain Armando Saburen of the Department of State Security stopped Luis Alberto Rivera of the Eastern Free Press Agency (APLO) and threatened to send him to jail for reporting the news from Cuba.

Saburen stopped Rivera on July 6 at the corner of San Germán and Jobito streets and told him: "Your activities are illegal; we will apply Law 88 (the Gag law) and put you away for several years."

Saburen told Rivera that the political police had decided to jail him if he continued to report news from Cuba.
