Unaffordable Paint Job

HAVANA, July 4 (María de los Angeles González Amaro, UPECI) – The Cuban government is planning to paint all the buildings in the principal thoroughfares of the capital to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the beginning of Fidel Castro’s revolution. The only catch is the occupants of the buildings have to pay for the paint jobs.

Many residents are unhappy, saying they can’t afford to pay. Celia Jorge Ruiz, for example, who lives in Calzada 10 de Octubre in Arroyo Naranjo in the outskirts of Havana, says her share of the paint job comes to 400 pesos.

She is retired and her income is 125 pesos a month. Less than a year ago, officials of the Municipal Department of Housing visited the area. At that time, they also proposed the painting scheme, but residents also balked at paying the price and nothing was done.
