Peasants Whose Cattle Is Stolen Are Fined

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, July 2 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) – When farmer Oscar Yáñez Álvarez lost a cow to rustlers, the head of the Animal Husbandry Enterprise of Chivirico fined him 500 pesos.

Yáñez told APLO that the official, known locally as "Lao," called a meeting of all farmers in the area and said: "Any peasant who has cattle stolen will be inexcusably fined."

Lao’s despotic manner has led to bad feelings among the people in the area. Some said that the government had promised to electrify all the houses in the area, but that instead government officials are more concerned with levying fines and other matters of a political nature. Meanwhile, the cattle rustlers operate freely.
