State Security Department Questions ANAIC's "mismanagement"

ALTO SONGO, July 2 (Humberto Melo, Coordinador ANAIC Zona Oriental) – During an "interrogation" to which I was subject on June 26, State Security officers known as "Over" and "Saboren" expressed to me their concern about the "mismanagement" of humanitarian aid funds by ANAIC (National Association of Independent Cuban Farmers) president Antonio Alonso.

They also praised my "leadership qualities" and said they were in a position to appoint me to a directorship of a State co-op; but, they said, should I be inclined to leave the country, they were also in a position to help me with the paperwork.

This "interview" lasted from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the offices of the National Center of Animal Husbandry, an organization to which I belong.

In the conversation I explained to them the independent character of the ANAIC, run solely by its members and free of government control, and told them their concern would be better focused on irregularities in the ANAP (National Association of Small Farmers), where 70% of the units are not productive and where there are known cases of corruption and mismanagement of resources.

They also dropped accusations, even at a personal level, regarding Diosmel Rodríguez (inspiration and founder of the ANAIC), now in exile.

At the end of the meeting they again stressed their willingness to help me in any way, from medicines to money. They said all I had to do is call them at the telephone number they gave me.
