LA ESPERANZA, February 21 (Isabel Rey Rodríguez, Cuba Press) - Close to 12 families were evicted on February 14 from unused sugar ministry facilities which they were using as housing in Villa Clara province, central Cuba.
Authorities informed the squatters that they would be evicted because the facilities had been granted to workers of "Micropresas," which owns the facilities.
The new tenants emptied the contents of the structures out on the street, evicting the women and children. The men were working at the time.
A source said that the new tenants do not need the facilities because they already have good housing. One of them was berated by the townspeople in public for participating in the eviction.
The squatters were families with children who used to live in huts or in rooms that barely kept out the rain.
