PINAR DEL RIO, December 18 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI)
Dozens of peasants and their descendants commemorated the 29th anniversary of
their forced removal from their homes in central Cuba to the western province of
Pinar del Río.
In 1971 there were some anti-Castro guerillas in the Escambray mountains of
central Cuba. The government rounded up all residents of the area and exiled
them for life to towns it built for them in westernmost Pinar del Río
province. Today, these are called "captive towns" and their residents
have never been allowed to go back.
