Three handicapped men, two of them blind, were sentenced to one year in jail for
disrespect after they were arrested for selling imitation jewelry on a street
corner.
Reyniel Chapman, Miltón López, and Antonio Betancourt are in
the Valle Grande prison, in Havana. They were arrested at the corner of Águila
and Dragones streets where they were trying to make a living by selling costume
jewelry. The three, along with others who were also rounded up, were fined 1,500
pesos and forbidden to continue selling on the streets.
Chapman, López, and Betancourt protested the measures, and were
subsequently tried for disrespect and disobedience.
