Robberies on the increase in Havana

One popular mode is "snatching," consisting of just that, snatching purses, gold chains, watches, or any parcel someone may be carrying. The big score would be to snatch a parcel from someone who may be carrying purchases made at a dollar store. The thieves do not respect the elderly or pregnant women.

The perpetrators, most of them young, black men, ride bicycles and roam in search of their victims, preferably in out-of-the-way places, although the most brazen will attack in a crowd and occasionally under the noses of the police.

Residents have responded by taking a family member along when they go shopping at the dollar stores.

The municipalities with the highest indices of robberies are Old Havana, Central Havana, and 10 de Octubre.
