Natural flowers banned from Havana cemetery

HAVANA, December 17 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba-Verdad) – Public health officials have banned natural flowers from the La Lisa cemetery in Havana, in an effort to eradicate mosquito-breeding grounds, suggesting artificial flowers be used instead.

According to an employee in the cemetery, public health officials have detected an increase in the aedes aegypti mosquito in the area, so they issued orders to throw away any natural flowers in the cemetery, even if laid without water.

Artificial flowers can be obtained at the dollar stores at 2 dollars for the least expensive bunch. The average monthly salary in Cuba is the equivalent of 11 dollars.
