Hepatitis outbreak in eastern Cuba

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, December 14 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO) – A hepatitis outbreak is affecting the residents of the municipality of Sagua de Tánamo, in eastern Cuba. The biggest number of cases has been reported among students.

"In the "La Alcarraza Vieja" middle school, 56 students have hepatitis," said one students at the school. An indeterminate number of cases were also reported at the Agricultural Polytechnic Institute.

Among the possible causes for the outbreak, water was a primary suspect. Independent specialists have said drinking water in the area is "highly contaminated."

Health authorities in the region have discretely begun a vaccination campaign. The official news media have not reported the outbreak. So far, there are no known deaths from the disease.
