SANTIAGO DE CUBA, December 14 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO) A hepatitis
outbreak is affecting the residents of the municipality of Sagua de Tánamo,
in eastern Cuba. The biggest number of cases has been reported among students.
"In the "La Alcarraza Vieja" middle school, 56 students have
hepatitis," said one students at the school. An indeterminate number of
cases were also reported at the Agricultural Polytechnic Institute.
Among the possible causes for the outbreak, water was a primary suspect.
Independent specialists have said drinking water in the area is "highly
contaminated."
Health authorities in the region have discretely begun a vaccination
campaign. The official news media have not reported the outbreak. So far, there
are no known deaths from the disease.
