HAVANA, December 10 (José Fornaris, Cuba-Verdad) An angry
crowd of about 1,500 strong prevented police and housing authority officials
from evicting a family of four from their house here.
The crowd, some carrying sticks and stones, congregated around officials of
the Municipal Housing Authority and the National Police who were trying to evict
a family from a house where they were presumably living illegally. The family
consists of an older woman, a man, a pregnant woman and a young child.
More that 40 percent of Havana's housing is in fair or poor condition; 24
percent of housing units are beyond repair. The city of 2.2 million has a severe
housing shortage.
