SANTIAGO DE CUBA, April 21 (Luis Alberto Rivera, APLO) - More than 100 people face charges of trafficking, possesion and drug consumption in a case to be tried starting April 17. Most of those charged are from Moa municipality, in Holguín province, eastern Cuba.
The case derives from drugs found aboard a Haitian freighter which ran aground near Moa in 1998. The vessel was towed to port and was being broken up when the drugs were found in a hidden compartment on the hull. The drugs were then transported and distributed in several areas, including the
city of Havana at the other end of the island, according to the charges.
Experts say drug trafficking and consumption are on the increase in Cuba, in spite of stiff penalties for these crimes.
