VILLA CLARA, CAIBARIEN, April 11 (Héctor Trujillo Pis) - A man drowned when the boat in which he was hoping to reach the United States sank.
Four people left from here on April 3 in a fifteen-and-a-half foot boat hoping to make the US, but ran into bad weather. The boat sank, taking Juan José Pérez Rojas, 49, with it.
"We saw him get lost in the turbulent water, there was nothing we could do," said one of the survivors.
The other three, Jesús Portal Delgado, Sandra González Carrillo and Javier Villalobos Rojas were rescued by a fishing boat from the local fishing co-op. They were sunburned and exhausted from their ordeal.
The survivors were given medical attention upon reaching land and then were taken into custody by the Department of State Security in Santa Clara, who kept them for 40 hours and later released them.
