University Students, Lying, And The Visa Lottery

HAVANA, April 10 (María Elena Rodríguez, Cuba-Verdad) - In the recently concluded VI Congress of the University Students Federation the latest slogan got much play: "The University in only for revolutionaries."

In previous days, university students declared their inconditional loyalty to the Revolution at graduation, to go work wherever they were assigned.

Yet not all students really think that way. Some talked to Cuba Verdad. "We want to leave the country, even if it is to go to Africa. Life in Cuba is gloomy, indescribable, so what does being 'inconditional' matter. The important thing is to get out of here. You want my name? What you want is to destroy me forever." Second year medical student.

"What are you going to do? If you don't fulfil all the political activities and can demonstrate having done so, you don't have the right to study in the university unless you win the lottery and can go to the United States. I wouldn't give you my name on a bet!" Third year student in Engineering.

"First of all, I am not going to identify myself. But I will tell you that studying in a university in the United States offers you a superior education and an internationally recognized degree, and the liberty to go to work where you please when you finish. You want more? Even 'papa's boys' (referring to the sons of the nomenklatura) can figure that out. Third year Law student.

"It is true, but what you don't know is how many students are participating in the visa lottery, and they are all hoping to be winners. My name? Be happy with what you already have." Second year Liberal Arts student.
