Sanitary authorities spray for mosquitoes in Ranchuelo

RANCHUELO, Cuba, June 6 (Félix Reyes Gutiérrez, Cubanacán Press / www.cubanet.org) - Sanitary authorities started spraying to control a mosquito infestation in Ranchuelo last week, after earlier resisting such a move and trying other measures.

Treatments such as pouring alcohol on standing water containers and setting it on fire proved ineffective in the end.

"At last the government resorted to fumigation," said one housewife. "I thought they were going to wait until the mosquitoes sent us to the hospital or to the cemetery."

Reportedly, hundreds of breeding spots for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, a vector for yellow fever, dengue, and other diseases, in Ranchuelo prompted the authorities to opt to resume spraying.
