PINAR DEL RÍO, February 26 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - Housing authorities here forcibly evicted Buenaventura Díaz,
classifying him as an "illegal resident" in spite of his having lived
in the house for the last eight years with all his documents in order.
In January, 1995, Díaz started living in his aunt's house. When his
aunt, Zaida Rodríguez, died in August, 1998, Díaz stayed in the
house along with his cousin, Iris Rodríguez.
In 2002, Rodríguez and her family left the island, and that's when Díaz
woes began. Housing authorities started to hound him for various documents
showing his family ties to his dead aunt and to his cousin, all of which he
produced.
Nevertheless, January 24 officials gave Díaz 30 days to vacate the
premises, and February 20, police broke in and evicted him.
The house had been remodeled by Díaz and his relatives with the help
of money sent from abroad.
