HERRADURA, February 26 (Lázaro Raúl González, CPI /
www.cubanet.org) - Recent raids and confiscations by police and inspectors from
various departments have not paralyzed the growing informal or underground
economy, but they have slowed it down some.
On February 17, 15 truckloads of produce being shipped from Pinar del Río
to Havana were intercepted by police in Los Palacios municipality. The produce
was all taken to the government warehoused in Los Palacios and recorded at the
official prices.
Two days later and twenty kilometers to the west, in Herradura, police
raided three homes and found several CO2 tanks, soft drink boxes, refrigerators,
ice-cream-making equipment, and a tank of moonshine.
In all cases, police have imposed stiff fines on truck drivers and home
brewers.
