Barrier to safeguard plantains irks residents

HOLGUÍN, February 14 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO / www.cubanet.org) - Sagua de Tánamo residents are complaining that a barrier installed on a local road to prevent the theft of plantains from a nearby farm is simply an excuse to search them and their belongings every time they go by.

The barrier, on the "Juan Díaz" road, was installed to prevent the theft of plantains from the "Antonio Maceo Agricultural Contingent" and is manned by uniformed police.

"If we leave home ten times to go into town and go on the road, our belongings are searched, and there's the barrier stretching across the road, and operated by armed guards dressed in green, as if it were the border between two countries," said a farmer who plants beans and greens in the vicinity.
