WINNIPEG (Jun 20, 2006) - A group of pastors
opposed to decades-old sanctions against
Cuba by the United States will begin a journey
this week with a truckload of medical supplies
for the Communist country.
The Pastors for Peace truck will set out
for Minneapolis, the American starting point
for one of 10 caravans crossing the U.S.
and stopping at rallies along the way before
converging in Texas to cross the U.S.-Mexico
border together, en route to Cuba.
"It's just such a noble gesture and
a political challenge to the U.S. government,"
said Diane Zack, one of the Winnipeg organizers.
"If they didn't have to cope with
the U.S. blockade, (Cubans) would've been
so much further ahead."
For 17 years, the U.S.-based, non-denominational
groups's caravan has rallied to break the
U.S. government's sanctions against Cuba.
The truck will be loaded today at the Winnipeg
warehouse of the International Health Overseas
Project Education, which is the non-profit
organization that donated the supplies for
the venture.
The cargo will include syringes, dressings,
bandages and surgical gloves as well as
wheelchairs, canes, crutches, walkers and
two ultrasound machines.
