Political prisoner decries prison conditions

CIEGO DE AVILA, Cuba - June 8 (Luis Esteban Espinosa, Jóvenes sin Censura / www.cubanet.og) - Political prisoner Virgilio Mantilla decried poor conditions in the Kilo[meter] 9 prison in Camagüey province where he is serving a seven year sentence.

Mantilla, in a telephone call on May 30 to the Cuban Foundation for Human Rights said authorities have been serving rotten ground meat for more than 20 days in a row and that prisoners have been protesting.

He also said most prisoners have skin rashes from the proliferation of bed bugs, and that there are leaks of unsanitary water in many of the cells.

Mantilla was the National Secretary for Attention to Political Prisoners of the Human Rights Foundation before being sentenced for protesting the police beating of independent journalist Jesús Álvarez.
