Cuba says US denied visa
to U.N. AIDS delegate
Agencies, June 2, 2006.
UNITED NATIONS, agencies - Cuba complained
on Friday that the United States denied
a visa to the head of its delegation to
a U.N. AIDS conference, but a U.S. spokesman
said he applied too late, according to Reuters.
Jose Ramon Balaguer Cabrera, Cuba's Public
Health Minister, did not receive a visa.
Four other members of the Cuban delegation
who, according to a spokesman for the U.S.
Mission to the United Nations, applied in
due time, were allowed into the United States.
Balaguer applied for his visa two working
days before the start of the conference,
said spokesman Richard Grenell. "His
application was never denied. It is still
being processed."
"Once again, the United States is
in blatant violation of its obligations
under the Host Country Agreement,"
the Cuban mission to the United Nations
said in a statement.
