Police search several homes in Batabanó
HAVANA, Cuba - July 5 (Richard Roselló
/ www.cubanet.org) - The economic police
in Batabanó, a small port city in
the southern coast of Havana province, were
unusually active in the last three weeks
in June, searching several homes for signs
of prohibited economic activity.
They searched, for example, the home of
Reinaldo Rodríguez, a local farmer,
on suspicion of illegal sale of rice and
beans, and that of Rubén Rey, for
the sale and hoarding of seafood. This was
the second such search for Rey.
Sadiel Blanco, a retired military man,
said they searched his home because they
had information that he had been selling
rum and food, but didn't find any incriminating
evidence.
Police detained Juan Laureiro Reyes under
an accusation of the theft of some 30 refrigeration
units from the warehouse where he is a watchman.
They released Reyes after some days in jail,
when they found no evidence of the theft
in his home.
Reyes said he had been locked up along
with two members of management with the
company, who were still being investigated
for the thefts.
At the home of Andrés González,
police went looking for evidence that he
had been building some sort of water craft
to leave the country, along with Gloria
Torres, who herself has been caught repeatedly
selling food illegally.
